Cal Lutheran University has been named to the John Templeton Foundation’s 1997-98 Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges, a designation that recognizes character building as an integral part of the college experience.

“We’re quite pleased with receiving this recognition,” CLU spokeswoman Lynda Fulford said. “Our mission statement certainly matches with being a character-building university.”

CLU, one of 135 schools in 42 states selected, will be featured in the 1997-98 Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges Reference Guide, to be published in the fall.

Although the designation does not come with a grant, Fulford said it will help CLU obtain grants from other foundations.

The Pennsylvania-based foundation established the designation in 1989 as part of its activities that promote character development in high school and college students, said spokeswoman Joann DiLullo.

The announcement marks the first time CLU has made the Honor Roll, although it applied for the listing last year, Fulford said. Fulford said the university made the list this year because it submitted a more concrete explanation of its goal of educating students for a global society.
