Paskowitz Surf Camp Has Wide Range of Students

SAN CLEMENTE —  Dorian Paskowitz never bought into the idea that surfing is a solitary sport. In fact, Paskowitz believed it could serve as a way to unify families, friends and strangers, and teach them health and a respect for the ocean.

With this premise, Paskowitz started what is now considered the granddaddy of surf camps.

Founded in 1972, the Paskowitz Surf Camp has had more than 2,500 people pass through the grounds based in San Clemente. Paskowitz’s son, Israel, now runs the camp.

“While the mission of the camp is to teach surfing and safety, it also provides a communal atmosphere,” said Israel Paskowitz. “A lot of people come back every summer. Like there’s this one doctor who comes with his daughter every summer. They’ve been coming since she was in her preteens. Now she’s graduating from college and is ready to get married. The doctor told me that his daughter put in the prenuptial agreement that she be allowed to come back every summer with her dad to our surf camp.”

Paskowitz said many of those who come to the camps are from out of state. And the number of women calling his camp to register has doubled in recent years.

“It’s becoming very popular with women,” said Paskowitz. “But instead of trying to learn on their own, like a lot of guys try to do, most women seem to want to learn from an experienced teacher.”
