Ralph Kramden Had More (Lower) Class
How could Howard Rosenberg seriously assert that “Roseanne” “tops all of TV’s distinctively blue-collar comedies” (“As ‘Roseanne’ Clocks Out, It’s a Matter of Class,” Calendar, May 19)? His subsequent list of pretenders to the throne he hands to “Roseanne” fails to mention the true monarch of working-class comedies--Jackie Gleason’s “The Honeymooners.” Characters, situations, motivations, even sets on “The Honeymooners” resonate with far more lower-middle-class authenticity than anything I’ve ever seen on “Roseanne.”
