Berlin’s Hotel Adlon Plays Name Game
A famous name returns to Berlin today when the Hotel Adlon opens.
The original Adlon, near the Brandenburg Gate, hosted Kaiser Wilhelm II, Greta Garbo, Albert Einstein and the Rockefellers before burning down in World War II.
The current Adlon is a new, $300-million structure on the same site. The Kempinski Hotels group, which operates upscale properties such as the Campton Place Hotel in San Francisco, bought the name and land rights from the Adlon family. The new hotel includes the original’s fountain and has a similar exterior, but otherwise it does not duplicate the 1907 structure, a spokeswoman said.
The hotel has 337 rooms and suites in six stories, a casual restaurant and a gourmet restaurant (scheduled to open by Aug. 1). Room rates through Aug. 26 start at $226, double occupancy, including tax and service charges; then they rise to about $308. Reservations: (800) 426-3135.
