340-Acre Brush Fire Kills 1, Destroys 6 Mobile Homes in Riverside County
A 340-acre brush fire in Riverside County killed an elderly woman Tuesday and destroyed six mobile homes, authorities said.
At least 14 other people were injured in the fire. Twelve were treated at the scene and released and two were taken to local hospitals, authorities said.
The fire left six mobile homes smoking hulks as it moved east, said Joanne Evans, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry--Riverside County Fire Department. Some outbuildings were also burned, she said.
Full containment was expected by midnight and full control by this morning, Evans said, adding that the fire was caused by a mower sparking against something.
The dead woman was a resident of the mobile home park who died of smoke inhalation, Evans said. The woman’s identity was not available.
The blaze began about 3:20 p.m. near Calimesa, west of Interstate 10.
The mobile home park was evacuated, although some residents were seen standing near their homes with hoses.
About 180 firefighters were on the lines.
