Exercising the Body and Brain in N.Y.
The new Science Playground, opening next Saturday in New York City, takes hands-on exhibits a step further by using whole-body participation to teach principles of motion, sound and light.
The 30,000-square-foot outdoor area, next to the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, is on a giant scale reminiscent of “Alice in Wonderland.” Adults and children can steer, yank and crank equipment in more than 20 experiments.
For instance, visitors can: race down two slides, one curved and one straight, to see which route is faster; balance on a seesaw to explore leverage; and use mirrors to redirect sunlight onto a photocell, which drives propellers.
The adjacent Hall of Science includes 185 indoor interactive exhibits and a library. Admission, good to both facilities, is $4.50 adults 16 and older, $3 children and seniors, free under age 3. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Information: telephone (718) 699-0005.
