Panel Begins Weighing Police Chief Candidates
After a daylong meeting shrouded in secrecy, the panel charged with screening the 32 applications for Los Angeles police chief convened without agreement Friday and will meet again to continue its work, officials said.
The 10-member panel will winnow the list of applicants and turn over at least six names to the Police Commission. The civilian panel will conduct interviews with those candidates before giving Mayor Richard Riordan a list of the top three candidates in order of preference. Riordan will select the next police chief. The City Council has final approval of the candidate.
Seven LAPD officials have applied for the post, which pays $143,000 to $215,000 a year. Sheriff’s chief Lee Baca has also expressed interest in the job.
