Farewell, Victorians
I say “amen” to Derek Widdis’ letter on the loss of beautiful single-family homes in Los Angeles (Times, June 8).
Case in point:
I took a job with an advertising agency situated at the corner of 6th Street and Lafayette Park Place. It was 1977. Lafayette Park Place, between 6th and 5th streets, was lined with lovely old Victorian homes, with only a few condos.
About six or seven years later, my company moved west to Brentwood. In that short span, every Victorian but one had been replaced with ugly brick-and-glass condominiums. The lone survivor, on the corner of 5th, was almost torn down but was rescued by preservationists after the wrecking ball had already done a lot of damage. There goes our heritage.
