Teen Thought Prom Baby Was Stillborn
WASHINGTON — The New Jersey teenager charged last week with murdering the baby she delivered at her senior prom told friends she believed the child was dead, NBC-TV’s “Dateline” reported Sunday.
The program interviewed three friends of Melissa Drexler, 18, who said they spent time with Drexler after her indictment last week and described her as looking very pale, scared, tense and confused.
Drexler is out on bail awaiting her trial on charges she suffocated the newborn after giving birth in a bathroom stall at a banquet hall in Aberdeen Township, N.J.
“She didn’t know it was alive. It came out blue. She assumed it was dead,” Amanda Jacobsen told the program. Jacobsen and the other two friends told NBC they assumed Drexler left the baby in a garbage can because she believed it was dead.
Drexler concealed her pregnancy from her parents and friends.
