Choi Advances in Women’s Amateur

Eunice Choi of Dove Canyon won both of her matches Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Brae Burn Country Club in West Newton, Mass.

Choi defeated Chiharu Yamaguchi of Lacy, Wash., 1-up, to win the second-round match in the afternoon. In the first round, Choi defeated Stephanie Keever of Las Vegas, 4 and 3.

Alicia Allison of Santa Ana also won her first-round match, defeating Carol Thompson of Sewickley, Pa., 2 and 1, but lost in the second round to Hilary Homeyer of Edina, Minn., 4 and 3.

Jenny Glasgow of Corona del Mar lost in the first round to Shannon Ingalls of Fallbrook, 6 and 5.

The tournament concludes Saturday.

Erica Sorgi of Mission Viejo won the girls’ 14-15 one-meter springboard title at the Speedo National Junior Diving Championships in Austin, Texas. With the victory, Sorgi also qualified for the U.S. team at the world junior championships.
