Making Every Minute Count

I am an insurance agent-service manager for the Auto Club of Southern California, a third-year law student and single mother of a 9-year-old daughter.

How do I balance my work and personal and family life? Prayer. Lots of prayer throughout my day. I sleep five hours or less every night. I leave the house at 7 a.m. and don’t get home until 10 p.m.

When do I have time for fun? Rarely. However, I do try to “make” fun in everything I do; otherwise, I would go crazy. My weekends are pretty full with studying, but when I do take a break, I make it worthwhile.

I don’t have much extra cash, but I try to have exciting excursions to different places. It may not be very far or cost anything, but anywhere away from my house I pretend I’m in a different world. I love amusement parks, beaches, parks, the movies, etc. I enjoy going to the observatory in Griffith Park. I pretend that I’ve finally reached the top of the world. I feel wonderfully free.

I compare the infiniteness of the ocean water when I go to the beach to the infiniteness of my dreams and my potential for success.

I enjoy roller-skating and playing basketball with my daughter. My favorite pastime is snuggling with my daughter, Bryana, while watching a good movie and eating lots of junk food. When I have a special someone in my life, I enjoy dancing, taking long drives along the coast, weekend getaways to local romantic spots, wine, massages, baths, candles and soft music. To sum it up, I guess what helps me keep balanced is being able to “escape,” even if it’s in the bathtub with bubble bath, music and candles.

You have to learn to get away to collect your thoughts once in awhile, just to keep everything in perspective. Then you can come back and take care of business.
