Prey Ground--Live hawks and owls will be on display at a free campfire program highlighting the birds of prey that live in and around Orange County. The program, presented by the California Department of Fish and Game, the Orange County Harbors, Beaches and Parks and the Upper Newport Bay Naturalists, begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Shellmaker Island. Bring a blanket; marshmallows will be served. Shellmaker Island is off Backbay Drive in Newport Beach. Information: (714) 640-6746.

All in the Family--Kids glued to the television or hooked on computer games? Take them to Adventure 16 Outdoor & Travel Outfitters’ free program Tuesday on wilderness ethics and outdoor skills. Representatives of such organizations as the Boy and Girl Scouts and Outward Bound will be on hand. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Costa Mesa store, 1959 Harbor Blvd. Information: (714) 650-3301.

African Scene--Diana Berry, vice chairwoman of the Sierra Club, Orange County chapter, will give a slide show of her photo safari to Africa at the group’s monthly meeting. It begins at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at REI, 1411 S. Village Way, Santa Ana. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Good News, Bat News--Learn about Orange County bats, their habitat and natural history on a night hike at the Rancho Mission Viejo Land Conservancy on Saturday. Stephanie Remington, a graduate biology student at Cal Poly Pomona, will lead the tour from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. She is currently surveying the county to determine what kinds of bats live here. Preregistration for the hike is required and children must be 12 or older. Cost is $6. Registration: (714) 489-9778. The conservancy is in the coastal foothills five miles east of San Juan Capistrano.

Making Waves--Young surfers can raise money to protect and preserve the ocean by taking part in the Surfrider Foundation’s “Kids for Clean Waves” surf contest Aug. 23 and 24, 7 a.m. to noon at the Seal Beach Pier. The entry fee is $20 in advance; $30 on the day of the event. Categories are in longboard, shortboard and bodyboard for surfers 15 and younger. There will also be a paddle race and beach cleanup.
