Assault Charge Downgraded

A felony assault charge against Kentucky’s James Watts was downgraded to a misdemeanor. Prosecutors said the July 17 shooting of teammate Omar Smith was unintentional but reckless. . . . LSU Coach Gerry DiNardo signed a contract extension that will run through the 2002 season.
