If only it were open in this muggy weather.

The city’s first ice skating rink is under construction at 3400 Michaelson Drive for an Oct. 31 opening. The curious began taking notice when work on Irvine Ice Arena started in March.

“There’s a lot of interest,” said Joy Medley, marketing director. “A lot of people have been passing by.”

The 37,800-square-foot complex features a health club, skating schools, massage therapy, corporate and youth hockey leagues and figure-skating shows.

Yes, the ice will meet hockey regulations.

Drawings of the exterior look similar to a barn found in the old Irvine Ranch.

Medley said the goal is to create a community destination where families feel safe bringing their children to skate and exercise.

Irvine has roller rinks but no ice arenas.

Businessman Stephen J. Coonan owns the business. Construction prices were not disclosed.

Membership is available and regular admission is $8. Skate rentals are extra.

A general information booth will be set up at the Irvine Harvest Festival, Oct. 3-5 at Harvard Avenue and Barranca Parkway.
