Titan Women Win Volleyball Tournament

Cal State Fullerton captured the championship of the Southern Mississippi women’s volleyball tournament with two victories Saturday at Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.

Titan setter Carolyn Kittell had 93 assists in two matches and was named tournament MVP. Kittell had 58 assists in a 16-14, 15-9, 16-14 victory over Mississippi (0-2) and she had 35 assists in a 15-6, 15-8, 15-7 victory over Southwestern Louisiana (1-2).

Katie Crawford had 40 kills and LaCretia Smith added 22 kills in the two games as the Titans improved to 3-0. Crawford and Smith were named to the all-tournament team.

In the Pepperdine women’s volleyball invitational:

Tulane 3, UC Irvine 2--Ashley Reese, Shannon Hergert and Jill Fayard each had 11 kills to lead Tulane (1-1) to a 15-8, 7-15, 16-14, 6-15, 15-9 victory. UC Irvine (1-2) was led by Cynthia Trotter with 13 kills and Larissa Carter with 12 kills. In another match, Sarah Libecap and 15 kills and Teri Zartman had 57 assists to lead the Anteaters to a 15-13, 15-9, 8-15, 7-15, 15-10 victory over Northern Arizona (0-3).

In the Concordia Labor Day women’s volleyball festival:

Colorado School of Mines 3, Southern California College 1--Tina Rose had eight kills, five digs and five blocks in a 6-15, 13-15, 15-11, 11-15 loss. Sally Birkhauser had 12 kills and Denise Lundberg had 10 kills, as SCC defeated Fort Lewis (Colo.), 15-11, 15-2, 11-15, 15-8.

In the Reebok women’s soccer invitational:

Brigham Young 3, CS Fullerton 2--Shauna Rohbock, Sara Reading and Kim Lowe each scored for BYU in the season opener for both teams.

Christina Stewart and Michele Rice each scored for the Titans. The tourney concludes today with BYU facing San Diego and Fullerton playing Alabama.

Alabama, 1, San Diego 0--Ashley Kirkland scored the game’s only goal in overtime for the Crimson Tide.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UCI 3, Oregon State 0--Senior Tracie Manz scored two goals and junior Nicole Bucciarelli scored the other goal to lead the Anteaters to the season opening victory.
