Student to Be Delegate at U.S. Senate Youth Event
Mayra Mendoza, a senior at Tustin High School, has been selected as one of two California delegates to attend the 36th annual U.S. Senate Youth Program in Washington, Feb. 28-March 7.
Mendoza, 17, will join 104 delegates who will meet with leading Cabinet members, a Supreme Court justice and congressional policymakers.
Each delegate will receive a $2,000 college scholarship from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
The selection “has placed [Mendoza] in a very elite group,” said Tustin High Principal Larry Carlson. “She’s certainly an outstanding person, and we’re very happy to have her representing Tustin High.”
Mendoza, who plans to become a pediatrician, is student body president, plays on the varsity volleyball team, is chapter president of the Future Leaders of America, and volunteers for diabetes and cancer associations.
