Train Crash Kills 1, Forces Evacuations

A freight train carrying chemicals slammed into another, igniting fires and forcing the evacuation of more than 1,000 residents near Rossville, Kan. An engineer was killed and a conductor suffered minor injuries. By early afternoon, the fires were out and most people were allowed to go back to their homes. The collision derailed 20 cars of the freight train en route to Kansas City from North Platte, Neb., said John Bromley, spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad.
