Opposition Plans Nationwide Strike
Pro-democracy activists called for a nationwide strike next month to press for reforms before elections. “There will be no work, no school, no transportation. Shops will remain closed,” opposition leader Willy Mutunga pledged, setting an Aug. 8 strike date. President Daniel Arap Moi, who previously had ordered police to break up protests, said he would now permit rallies and will meet next week with the opposition to discuss reform. Foreign Minister Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka said the ruling party is committed to minimal reforms now and comprehensive reforms after elections to be held by year’s end. Opposition and human rights groups dismissed the pledges as delaying tactics.
