Pickup Collides With Dump Truck; 11 Die
A dump truck pulling a backhoe collided with a pickup truck at an intersection in Concord Township, killing nine children and two women in the pickup. Two other children in the pickup were critically injured. The driver of the dump truck, who was not hurt, apparently either ran a stop sign or failed to yield the right of way, Jackson County sheriff’s Capt. Tony Philipps said. The sheriff’s department said there are no posted speed limits in the area and it could not immediately determine how fast the trucks were going when the crash occurred. All the children involved in the crash appeared to be under 10. Helicopters took the victims to area hospitals, said Jackson County Sheriff’s Sgt. Gerald Johnson. He said their identities were being determined.
