Krayzelburg Back on Top at 100 Meters in Nationals
Lenny Krayzelburg of Studio City came from behind to defeat Neil Walker of Verona, Wis., by .08 seconds to win the 100-meter backstroke at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Swimming Championships in Nashville on Tuesday night.
Krayzelburg, 21, who won both backstroke events at the summer Nationals last year, finished in 54.69 and qualified for the United States team that will compete in the World Championships at Perth, Australia, next year.
Kristine Quance of Northridge, who won the 400 individual medley earlier in the meet, was third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.31, finishing less than half a second behind 15-year-old Jenna Street of Johnson City, Tenn.
Carly Geehr, 12, of La Canada, finished 13th.
Jennifer Parmenter of Granada Hills, Geehr and Heather Boylan of Saugus High helped Rose Bowl Aquatics to a seventh-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
Mark Warkentin of Buenaventura Swim Club placed 15th in the 400 freestyle at 4:01.02.
BASEBALL
Area 6 American Legion co-chairman Charlie Hatfield said Tuesday that Valley North, which won the Area 6 championship, will open play at the state tournament in Yountville on Saturday at noon against an opponent to be determined.
“Which team [Valley North plays] has not been determined as far as we know,” Hatfield said.
The winner of the six-team, double-elimination tournament advances to the American Legion World Series.
Pitcher Matt Whisenant, a graduate of Glendale High, was traded by the Florida Marlins to the Kansas City Royals for catcher Matt Treanor.
TRACK AND FIELD
Schquay Brignac of the West Valley Eagles Track Club cleared 5 feet 7 inches to win the girls’ high jump and teammate Jason Lovell clocked 49.34 to win the boys’ 400 meters last week in the youth division (ages 13-14) at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics at Baton Rouge, La.
Lovell anchored the victorious 400 relay team that ran 44.59.
The Eagles won the girls’ 400 relay in the intermediate (14-15) and young women’s (16-18) division.
The intermediate team, which included Tiffany Thompson of Notre Dame High and Jayda Bailey of Taft, clocked 46.48.
The young women’s team, comprised of Eboni Grayson of Taft and the St. Bernard threesome of Miesha Withers, Regine Caruthers and Malika Edmonson, won with a time of 45.26.
AUTO RACING
T.K. Karvasek of Acton beat Greg Bratschie of Lancaster to win the Pro Stock Division main-event at Kern County Raceway last week.
Mike Bush of North Hills was fourth and Dean Johnson of Hidden Hills was fifth.
Karvasek also won the KCRazy 8’s Figure-Eight main event and Johnson was second.
In other feature races, Tom Wilson of San Fernando won the Pro Street Stock main event, Tom Berube of Simi Valley was first in the Mimi Stocks Division, Wolford won the Pure Street Stock main, and Rogers and Dave Suber of Simi Valley combined to win the train-racing event.
Jay Drake of Canyon Country took third in the 30-lap sprint-car main event race Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway. Marc Hart of Ventura finished 10th.
YOUTH SPORTS
Natalie Derr, 8, of Camarillo, earned a bronze medal in the U.S. national Taekwondo Junior Olympics earlier this month in Louisville, Ky.
