Capitals Come Back to Tie Flyers
Olaf Kolzig stopped 37 shots and the Washington Capitals rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the Philadelphia Flyers, 2-2, on Friday night at Landover, Md.
John LeClair got his league-leading 11th goal for the Flyers, who led 2-0 before the Capitals responded with second-period goals by Steve Konowalchuk and Calle Johansson.
The Flyers went 0 for 5 on the power play to extend their streak to 0-for-22 over four games.
But Philadelphia’s penalty killers made up for it, stopping Washington after Eric Lindros was called for a four-minute high-sticking penalty with 3:59 left in regulation.
Ron Hextall, coming off a poor performance against New Jersey last Monday in which he gave up five goals in 21 shots, had 30 saves.
Buffalo 3, Carolina 2--Jason Dawe scored with 1:39 left in overtime as the Sabres ended their seven-game road winless streak at Greensboro, N.C.
“You don’t like to say things so early [in the season], but I mean we were desperate, to say the least, to win a game,” Dawe said.
The Sabres moved ahead of the Hurricanes and out of last place in the Northeast Division. The Sabres hadn’t won on the road since a season-opening 3-1 victory over St. Louis on Oct. 1.
The Sabres held the Hurricanes without a shot on goal for the game’s final 18 minutes.
Chicago 5, San Jose 3--The Blackhawks, who had scored three or more times in a game only twice previously this season, got first-period goals from Eric Daze, Todd White and Alex Zhamnov at Chicago.
Chicago right wing Tony Amonte scored twice, adding insurance goals in the second and third periods for the Blackhawks, who entered the game with a league-low 19 goals.
Todd Gill and Owen Nolan scored power-play goals for San Jose, while Shark defenseman Doug Bodger added a late even-strength goal.
Goaltender Chris Terreri, acquired by Chicago from San Jose in January, had 26 saves.
