Fullerton’s Berg Deserves to Be in Leading Role Now
Geoff Berg started the season splitting time at quarterback for Fullerton College but there is no doubt that he is the team’s top quarterback now.
Berg threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns as Fullerton beat Golden West, 33-7, in a Mission Conference Central Division game Saturday at Cal State Fullerton.
It was the fifth consecutive victory, all with Berg starting, for Fullerton (5-2, 3-0 in the division), which moved into a first-place tie with Santa Ana (4-3, 3-0).
Both of Berg’s scoring passes were to Nick Armstrong. The first was for 12 yards and came with four seconds left in the first half, giving Fullerton a 20-7 lead.
The touchdown was set up when Fullerton linebacker Donnie Gunritz caused Golden West quarterback John Frank to fumble and defensive end Chuck Pine recovered it at the Golden West 41 with 26 seconds left in the half.
Berg threw for 18 yards to Anthony Scott (seven catches for 119 yards) on first down. A personal foul moved the ball to the 12.
“Before the season,” Berg said, “we weren’t together as a team. But we’ve started to come together and we have a lot of heart.”
Berg, who was 19 of 34, completed a nine-yard scoring pass to Armstrong for a 33-7 lead with 10:23 to play.
“Berg’s making great decisions,” Fullerton Coach Gene Murphy said. “His eyes aren’t bigger than his belly and he’s moving the chains.”
Gunritz had two sacks and linebacker Jeff Wucinich had two sacks, shared another, and finished with a team-high seven tackles.
