A Convent Convert
It was so exciting to open the Oct. 12 issue of The Times and see the Travel article, “Holy Hospitality,” one of the highlights of our two-month trek through Europe in 1992.
We found the Casa di Santa Brigida through a friend in Madrid.
Upon our arrival at the convent we were given a key to the “Big Green Door” of the guest quarters entrance. The sisters warmly advised us on what precautions to take when exploring the city by night. Our room was very basic, but the trust and security we felt far surpassed the lack of fancy amenities.
We were advised by a visiting priest to purchase a bottle of wine, cheese and crackers and spend an evening on the roof of the convent, which, of course, we did. The sounds of the church bells combined with the sounds of the city and the beautiful view of the Palazzo Farnese held a magical experience for us that evening.
