Kings Surprise Ewing, Knicks

Ten years ago, Michael Stewart was a Sacramento King ballboy who wanted Patrick Ewing’s autograph. Sunday night, he was in Ewing’s face.

Stewart, a free agent trying to make good with his hometown team, scored eight points and shut down Ewing in the fourth quarter as the Kings rallied to beat the New York Knicks, 86-78, at Sacramento for their first victory of the season.

“I thought Stewart did a pretty good job, he had a good a game,” said Ewing, who had 21 points but only one in the fourth quarter. “He came with a lot of energy, a lot of effort. He created havoc on the offensive boards and did a good job of blocking shots. He did a good job of banging me, bumping me and taking me out of my rhythm.”

Stewart, the University of California’s all-time leading shot blocker, said he’s still getting used to the notion of going up against players he idolized as a youth.

Mitch Richmond scored 23 points and Corliss Williamson added 18 for the Kings, who had lost their first four games.

Seattle 112, Philadelphia 105--Vin Baker had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Gary Payton had 16 points and 14 assists to lead the Supersonics over the 76ers for their fourth consecutive win at Philadelphia.

Allen Iverson led Philadelphia with 23 points and 10 assists. Derrick Coleman scored 17 points and Clarence Weatherspoon had 13 rebounds and 11 points for the 76ers.

Vancouver 104, Detroit 96--Blue Edwards scored eight points in overtime, including a three-pointer with 3:06 left, to lead the Grizzlies past the Pistons at Vancouver and extend the Piston losing streak to four games. Edwards finished with 16 points.

Grant Hill had 14 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists for Detroit, but only two points in the final 21 minutes.
