Selanne Upset by ‘Stupid’ Play

Team captain Teemu Selanne left the dressing room early Monday night to avoid saying something he would regret after the Mighty Ducks twice blew two-goal leads in a 6-4 loss to the San Jose Sharks.

But he didn’t hold back in his comments Tuesday.

“If we can’t play all 60 minutes, then we don’t deserve to win,” said Selanne, who had three goals in the first period and extended his goal-scoring streak to 11 games.

“We’re not good enough to take time off. We have to play 60 minutes. Our penalty killing has been terrible lately, and the power play is the same thing.

“I was very disappointed. That’s why I didn’t want to comment to the media. I didn’t want to say any comments about how stupid we played. [Playing against Montreal tonight] should be a good test and challenge for us to see how much we learned from [Monday].

“Stupid people keep making the same stupid mistakes. Smart people learn from their mistakes.”

Coach Pierre Page didn’t dwell on the breakdowns that led to Monday’s loss. Instead of rehashing the Ducks’ mistakes, he showed the players a videotape of Saturday’s 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

“As mad as you are right now, you’ve got to pick yourself up and go on,” Page said. “You’ve got to go back and remember the good things. That’s why we showed the players all the good things from the Vancouver game.”

The Canadiens have won five in a row, eight of 10 and have given up only 36 goals, second-fewest in the NHL. Mark Recchi is expected to extend his streak of consecutive games to 479.
