Geri Campeau, girls’ athletic director at Mater Dei, has been named girls’ basketball coach. She will replace Mary Hauser, her sister, who resigned to spend more time with her family.

“She has three kids now, and that takes up much of her time,” Campeau said Tuesday. “It’s not so much the coaching, but the administrative part.”

Campeau was Hauser’s assistant for four years. In the 1994-95 season, they guided the Monarchs to the section Division I championship, and the state Division I finals. Hauser’s record at Mater Dei was 105-16.

“My sister and I have similar [coaching] philosophies, so you won’t see a lot of changes,” Campeau said.

Dick Tucker, who has been employed at Orange Coast College since 1962, has been replaced as men’s golf coach as part of an athletic department shuffle. Athletic Director Barry Wallace will succeed Tucker and return to teaching.

Tucker, who is out of town, had been the college’s golf coach the last 21 years. However, he has been a part-time employee since 1995, when he retired from teaching. Wallace takes over the golf team at the start of the spring semester. He will remain athletic director until then.

Last spring, Wallace asked to return to the classroom after eight years as the athletic director. He got the assignment as golf coach instead of Tucker because full-time faculty members have the contractual priority, according to Chris O’Hearn, vice president of instruction.

“Barry has not assigned himself to this position,” O’Hearn. “I am the one doing the assigning. Because of a possible conflict of interest, I’m handling all assignments in the division this fall.”

Tucker, 71, will be invited to teach golf classes in the spring. O’Hearn will handle the duties of athletic director starting Jan. 1 until one is selected.
