Top-Ranked Ocean View Takes a Tumble in Girls’ Volleyball

Lakewood St. Joseph’s swept visiting Ocean View, the top-ranked team in Orange County, 15-9, 15-13, 15-12, Tuesday in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match.

Amy Knebel had 11 kills and Carissa Gough and Shelby Jameson each had 10 for the Seahawks (2-1). St. Joseph’s is ranked second in Division II-A and Ocean View is the top-ranked team in Division III-A.

In other nonleague matches:

No. 10 Capistrano Valley 3, El Toro 2--Kristen Gallup had 15 kills for the Cougars (3-2), who won the three-hour match, 15-4, 10-15, 12-15, 15-13, 15-12. Shannon Llamas had 16 kills for host El Toro (1-4).

Trabuco Hills 3, Laguna Hills 2--Amy Congo had 20 kills and Keri Bronson added 19 for Trabuco Hills (4-0), which won, 15-5, 14-16, 15-7, 6-15, 16-14. Laguna Hills is 4-1.

In Sunset League girls’ cross-country:

No. 1 Esperanza 21, No. 10 Los Alamitos 37--Esperanza’s Pam Smith won in 18 minutes 34 seconds and Beth Weidler finished third in 18:56 over the three-mile course at Yorba Regional Park. Kim Bates finished second for Los Alamitos in 18:53.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Santiago 13, Westminster 0--Amber Puskas scored seven goals for host Santiago (2-2).

In nonleague tennis:

No. 4 Villa Park 9, No. 5 Mater Dei 9 (Villa Park wins on games 83-72)--Melissa Esmero, Mater Dei’s No. 1 singles player, lost to her first opponent, Katey Becker, and withdrew from the rest of the match because of a shoulder injury.

Becker swept, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, for Villa Park (4-1). Mater Dei is 4-2.

In nonleague water polo:

No. 1 San Clemente 8, Los Alamitos 7--Josh Hewko scored three goals and his brother Jordan added two for San Clemente (6-2), which rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit. Tyler and Trevor Wawrzynski each scored two goals for Los Alamitos (8-3).

Esperanza 15, Servite 11--Cory Jobst scored five goals for Esperanza (6-2), ranked seventh in Division II. Michael Kim scored five goals for the Friars (3-4), ranked sixth in Division II.

Marina 15, La Habra 14--Justin Fassnacht scored six goals and Jeff Larson added three goals and eight assists for Marina (6-1), fifth-ranked in Division II. Nathan Allard scored four goals for La Habra, ranked seventh in Division II.

Santa Ana Valley 16, Dana Hills 13--Miguel Hernandez scored four of his six goals in the fourth quarter for the Falcons (8-3).
