El Camino’s Ward Dismantles Santa Ana

Santa Ana Coach Dave Ogas missed Saturday’s to watch his son Mike, who plays wide receiver for Cal State Northridge.

So it won’t be until the coaches watch film that Ogas sees the damage El Camino quarterback Damion Ward did to his team. Ward passed for five touchdowns as the Warriors beat Santa Ana, 46-24, in a Mission Conference game Saturday at Santa Ana Stadium.

It was the second consecutive five-touchdown game for Ward, who was 17 of 25 for 337 yards against Santa Ana.

Ward’s final pass was his most impressive, a 79-yard scoring play. Monjero Jones was streaking down the sideline and ran under the ball about the Santa Ana 40, continuing to the end zone without breaking stride.

Ward also had scoring throws of eight, 11, 20 and 35 yards. Eric Bolton had six catches for 113 yards also for El Camino (2-2). But it was a fumble by Bolton that gave Santa Ana some hope in the first half.

El Camino opened a 14-0 lead but Santa Ana got a five-yard scoring run from Tramel Robinson with 2 minutes 45 seconds left in the first quarter to cut the lead in half. Robinson had 120 yards in 23 carries.

Bolton fumbled after a reception on El Camino’s next possession and Santa Ana took over at its 40 when linebacker Joey Meza recovered.

The Dons reached El Camino’s 49 on two runs by Robinson but quarterback Stanley Villanueva threw an incomplete pass and was sacked for seven-yard losses on second and third down.

El Camino started at its 13 then was backed up to the six because of a holding call. But the Warriors needed only three more plays to score. The bulk of the yardage came on what should have been a 10-yard out pattern to Bolton.

But a pair of Dons failed to wrap up Bolton and he broke free for a 77-yard gain and a first down at the Santa Ana 11. On the next play, Ward threw to Flowers for an 11-yard scoring pass and a 21-7 lead.
