Private Planes
Steven Henigson needs to know several facts about private pilots and their aircraft (letter, Oct. 2). Noncommercial aircraft are inspected at least annually, or according to engine hours. Pilots are responsible for every aspect of their flight, and must pass extensive and thorough training to get a pilot’s license.
Aircraft and pilots operating out of congested areas must meet strict operating requirements. Airplanes are for sport as well as transportation. Light aircraft accidents are more newsworthy than car accidents, even though they occur far less often. Flying is far safer than driving when done by the rules.
