Monk TV: Make it two in a row for jazz in prime-time television, thanks to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. After a broadcast last December, ABC-TV will once again telecast a gala performance of jazz and pop music on Dec. 27, which will be taped next week at the Kennedy Center during the annual Monk Institute instrumental competition.
“We haven’t been in the television game for decades,” said Thelonious Monk Jr., “and now we’re back, for the second time. We’ve put a jazz show on in prime time, the public loves it, the ratings are good, and the network says, ‘Lets do it again.’ I see that as a win for all of jazz.”
The show, titled, “A Celebration of American Music,” will again be hosted by Bill Cosby. Guest stars include Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Clark Terry, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Sheila E. and Dave Brubeck.
