Dana Hills Gets Overtime Goal to Beat Sonora
After a six-goal comeback in the fourth quarter, Sonora fell to Dana Hills, 9-8, in overtime in the final of the Canyon boys’ water polo tournament.
Sonora trailed, 8-2, going into the final quarter. The Raiders rallied, tying the score on Eyosef Bogdanov goal with 38 seconds left.
Sonora (13-6) then stole the ball from Dana Hills, but the timekeeper forgot to reset the 35-second shot clock. With two second left, Jeremy Huntley was about to shoot from five meters when the shot clock expired. The referees admitted the mistake, then let the game go into overtime. Phil Rumps scored the winning goal for Dana Hills (13-5).
Huntley scored three goals for the Raiders in a 9-7 semifinal victory over Fullerton.
In the Estancia boys’ water polo tournament:
Estancia 9, Edison 6--John Senften had four goals and Matt Hoss had three to lead Estancia (13-9) to the tournament championship. Bryan DeWilde had 12 saves for Estancia, which captured its tournament title for the second consecutive year.
In a semifinal game, Nate Thorpe had three goals and DeWilde had 10 saves as Estancia defeated Aliso Niguel, 9-6.
In nonleague boys’ water polo:
No. 6 Capistrano Valley 12, Riverside Poly 4--Pat McConnell had four goals for Capistrano Valley (17-7). Jeff Felli had three goals for the Cougars.
Goalie Eric Meadows had 17 saves for Capistrano Valley.
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Santa Barbara San Marcos 3, No. 8 Huntington Beach 2--Ashley Ferris had 13 kills for Huntington Beach. The Oilers (9-4) won the first two games, 15-7, 15-12, but lost the next three, 15-13, 15-11, 15-1.
