‘A Star Is Born’

One of the most cherished films in the American cinema, restored in 1983 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In this 1954 musical version of the 1937 hit, Judy Garland (pictured) is the rising star discovered by James Mason, as a alcoholic matinee idol on the skids. Written by Moss Hart and directed by George Cukor, with songs by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin (AMC Tuesday at 8 p.m. and Wednesday at 11:45 a.m.).
