Teachers OK Partial Pay Cut Restoration
With an overwhelming show of hands, teachers agreed this week to accept a district offer that allows them to recover a bit of the 5% that was cut from their salaries.
More than 80 Laguna Beach Unified School District teachers attended the brief meeting Wednesday to consider the district’s offer, said Dennis Haryung, president of the Laguna Beach Unified Faculty Assn.
Haryung described his blunt message to the group: “ ‘You have two choices: You accept it or reject it. And if you reject it, you get nothing.’
“There were maybe only one or two out of the whole group that voted no.”
School officials were forced in November to make districtwide salary cuts to balance the budget. They now have enough money to return 1.25% to all employees whose salaries were cut, Haryung said.
