Troubled Reactor to Remain Shut Down

The nuclear reactor at the troubled Brookhaven National Laboratory won’t be restarted as long as it poses any threat to the health and safety of workers and residents near the Long Island facility, Energy Secretary Federico Pena said. After a meeting with Sen. Alfonse M. D’Amato (R-N.Y.) and Rep. Michael P. Forbes (R-N.Y.), Pena criticized the lab’s past management and said if its troubles cannot be overcome, the reactor will be shut permanently.
