UCI Women Finish 3rd in First Meet
The UC Irvine women’s cross-country team finished third Saturday in the Cal State Fullerton Jammin’ Invitational at Carbon Canyon Regional Park, the Anteaters’ season opener.
A club team, Reebok/V02 Max, won the meet with 26 points. Arizona was second with 75 and the Anteaters were third with 115 in the 16-team field. Host Cal State Fullerton was 10th with 233 points.
UCI was led by Christy Villa, who finished 13th in a time of 18 minutes 30 seconds over 5,000 meters. Freshman Allyson Kulak was 18th in 18:52. Amy Skieresz of Arizona won in 17:06.
The Titans’ top finisher was Sarah MacDougall, who was 10th (18:12).
The UCI men finished seventh in the 15-team field with 197 points; Arizona won with 29 points. The Titans finished in fifth place with 164 points.
Cal State Fullerton was led by Josh Slater, who was 22nd in a time of 26:12 on 8,000 meters. Jorge Gutierrez led the Anteaters by finishing 23rd in 26:15. Abdi Abdirahman of Arizona won in 24:58.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
Biola 2, Pacific Christian 1--Mark Campbell scored the only goal for Pacific Christian (1-1). Nate Wright and Eddie McRae each scored for Biola (2-1).
Concordia 4, Christian Heritage 0--Josh Egan had two goals and Shay Fox and Tim Flicker each had one goal to lead Concordia to the nonconference victory.
In nonconference women’s soccer:
Southern California College 4, Occidental 1--Meggan Fleener had a goal and two assists for SCC (2-1).
The two assists make Fleener the all-time SCC leader in assists with 20 in her career.
In the Fort Lewis women’s volleyball tournament:
Concordia loses four--Concordia was swept in its four matches in Durango, Colo. In games played Saturday, Kim Martin had eight kills in a 15-12, 15-4, 15-8 loss to the Colorado School of Mines and Jamie Gast had 13 kills in a 10-15, 15-8, 15-10, 15-8 loss to Adams (Colo.) State.
In games played Friday, Wendy Ames had 18 kills and Gast had 16 kills for Concordia (2-7) in a 16-14, 9-15, 11-15, 3-15 loss to host Fort Lewis. Ames had nine kills in a 11-15, 4-15, 3-15 loss to Western New Mexico.
In the Nevada Las Vegas women’s volleyball tournament:
UC Irvine 3, Texas San Antonio 0--Freshman Brooke Witt had 12 kills and Teri Zartman had 42 assists to lead the Anteaters to the 15-7, 15-7, 15-11 victory.
In the Northern Arizona women’s volleyball tournament:
Cal State Fullerton 3, Ohio 0--Michelle Halliday had 10 kills and Carloyn Kittell had 28 assists to lead the Titans to a 15-3, 15-11, 15-13 victory in the third-place match.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
Southern California College 3, Holy Names 0--Setter Tara Gonzales had 27 assists and Sally Birkhauser had nine kills to lead SCC to a 15-8, 15-10, 15-10 victory.
