DWP Fire Causes Power Outage for 1,500
TARZANA — More than 1,500 Department of Water and Power customers lost power for several hours Saturday night after a fire broke out at a distribution station.
At about 8:40 p.m., 30 Los Angeles city firefighters responded to reports of small explosions at the DWP switching yard at 4965 Vanalden Ave., LAFD spokesman Jim Wells said. The blaze was quickly extinguished.
Debra Sass, a DWP spokeswoman, said officials were investigating the cause of the accident and that electricity would be rerouted through alternative power lines to restore service to the homes.
Sass said a power regulator, which controls the amount of voltage sent to homes, ruptured and caused the fire. Sass described the regulator as a can-shaped object twice as tall as a pole-top transformer.
Areas affected by the power outage were bounded by Vanalden Avenue, Greenbriar Drive, Turnberry Drive, Gleneagles Drive, Anadale Drive and Ellenita Avenue, Sass said.
