Performances to Mark National Arts Month
To celebrate the arts and artists, Valley-based art centers will join others in Los Angeles County on Saturday to mark National Arts and Humanities Month.
The Encino Media Center and Lankershim Arts Center are two of eight venues offering more than 100 free performances and exhibits as part of the county’s third annual Arts Open House.
Encino Media Center, 16953 Ventura Blvd., will offer sessions with the CalArts’ jazz band throughout the day, as well as a video presentation of “Rosita Merrick Medicine Woman Presents a Shaman’s World,” beginning at noon.
The Lankershim Arts Center, 5108 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, will present theater and dance performances from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Performances will include “Footlights,” a selection of one-woman shows presented by Angel Hawk Productions, “Happy Birthday Baby,” a comedy that follows a couple through 15 years of marriage, and a children’s dance study exercise with audience participation.
Other centers presenting events as part of the open house include Casa de la Cultura in Long Beach, 18th Street Arts Complex in Santa Monica, the Music Center of Los Angeles County, Museum Row in mid-Wilshire and Pasadena Artspace.
Although not officially part of the open house events, art lovers also will be able to take in a new exhibit beginning this weekend at the McGroarty Art Center in Tujunga. An opening reception for the new monthlong exhibit of watercolors will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the center, 7570 McGroarty Terrace.
