Alemany Surprises Highland
A run-scoring fielder’s choice by Sasha Hernandez in the seventh inning gave Alemany High a 3-2 upset of Highland in a nonleague softball game Tuesday at Highland.
Natalie Isabell had two runs batted in for Alemany (7-3), including the game-tying RBI in the seventh.
Melissa Rawson’s two-run single in the fourth inning provided a 2-1 lead for Highland (8-1), ranked No. 2 in the region by The Times.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Cal State San Bernardino 11-4, Cal Lutheran 3-2--Nicole Fiola went six for seven and the Coyotes (12-14) swept at San Bernardino.
Kristin Taylor had three hits for Cal Lutheran (24-11).
BASEBALL
Palmdale 9, Quartz Hill 4--The Falcons hit three home runs and took sole possession of the Golden League lead at Palmdale.
Mike Arellano hit a three-run home run in the third inning that erased a 2-1 Quartz Hill lead.
Jason Gorman and Grant Livermont also hit home runs for Palmdale (7-2, 3-0 in league play).
Quartz Hill is 7-2, 2-1.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Kennedy d. Chatsworth, 15-4, 15-12, 15-12--Jeff Toon had 15 kills for the Golden Cougars in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Kennedy.
Because of spring break, Kennedy (7-1, 4-1) does not play another conference game until an April 14 match at Taft for a potential share of first place.
David Lurth had 10 kills for Chatsworth (3-5, 2-3).
Taft d. Cleveland, 15-2, 15-3, 15-4--Eric Bowen had five kills for the Toreadors (7-0, 5-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Taft.
Granada Hills d. Birmingham, 15-5, 15-8, 15-10--Mike Aleman had 12 kills and six aces for host Granada Hills in a Northwest Valley Conference victory.
Setter Frank Nguyen did not play for the Highlanders (6-2, 3-2) because of a sprained ankle sustained in the Dos Pueblos tournament on Saturday.
Jason Shinn, Nguyen’s replacement, had 27 assists.
Saugus d. Hart, 15-4, 15-0, 15-13--Jeff Steele had six kills for the Centurions (5-1, 1-0) in a Foothill League victory that lasted 52 minutes at Saugus.
MEN’S GOLF
Anteater Invitational--Jason Semelsberger of UCLA finished three-under-par over 54 holes and defeated Rob Rashell of Washington in a playoff at Coto De Caza Golf and Racquet Club.
Semelsberger, a Hart High graduate, finished at 73-68-72--213 on the par-72 course.
Cal State Northridge finished tied for 12th with Utah State in the 20-team tournament.
Ryan Fowlkes of Northridge finished in a tie for eighth at 74-71-74--219.
BOYS’ GOLF
Westlake 204, Notre Dame 206--J.T. Kohut shot a one-over-par 36 to help the Warriors (14-1-1) win in a downpour at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake.
North Hollywood 216, Monroe 226--Chang Yi and Shane Vongchaisaree shot four-over-par 40s for the Huskies (6-0, 6-0) in a City 3-A match at Hansen Dam Golf Course in Pacoima.
