California Highway Patrol investigators are trying to determine why a woman killed in a Sunday night hit-and-run accident was apparently lying in the middle of the road.

Denise Amaro, 31, of Los Alamitos was killed at 7:30 p.m. when she was run over by a 1991 Mercedes at the intersection of Montecito Road and Main Way Drive, CHP Officer John Langager said. Police believe she was lying in the southbound lane when she was hit.

A witness told police that the driver of the Mercedes stopped after the impact, tried to pull the victim out from under his car, then fled the scene. The witness followed the driver to his home and called police. The witness later identified 53-year-old Leonard Stephens of Seal Beach as the driver involved in the crash, CHP Officer Howard Powell said.
