Mission College has received a state grant of $503,000 to form a network of child-care providers for low-income families.

The grant from the California Department of Education is renewable after one year.

Child development instructor Julie Ruelas said the grant will be used to organize the Family Child Care Homes Network, which will serve parents with children up to 2 years old.

“This program will help those that are too young to be accepted in traditional preschool programs,” Ruelas said.

The grant will pay for a three-year stay for 72 infants and toddlers in licensed child care homes. The grant will also cover the cost of 60 days of child care for parents looking for work, Ruelas said.

The program will make care available between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 6 a.m to 6 p.m on weekends.
