To Some, His Masters Coverage Was Certainly Not Up to Par

Yes, Randy Harvey,

If Mark O’Meara hadn’t made those birdies on the last holes . . .

If Fred Couples had hit more bad tee shots . . .

If David Duval had broken his leg Sunday morning . . .

If Jim Furyk had forgotten to set his alarm . . .

If Paul Azinger had to take radiation treatment Sunday . . .

If Jack Nicklaus’ back was too painful . . .

If David Toms had never taken up golf . . .

If Darren Clarke had made an extra bogey . . .

If Justin Leonard had played poorly . . .

If Colin Montgomerie had stayed in Scotland . . .

Then maybe Tiger Woods might have won the Masters.

Mr. Harvey, you are a wonderful writer, but to say that last year’s Masters was more exciting than this year’s shows me, and any other true golf fan, that you don’t really know what you’re talking about.

No true golf fan likes to see a runaway more than any true baseball fan wants to see a 10-0 game.

Randy Harvey’s sanctimonious column regarding Tiger Woods and Fuzzy Zoeller [April 10] grabbed my attention, because I wanted to read about the Masters. Instead I read a lightweight piece on political correctness.

Mr. Harvey has chosen to make a name for himself and help sell a newspaper by continuing to dredge up the past. “But I can’t move on” makes me wonder about his motives.

Please use your righteous attitude and take action for some good instead of beating a man when he’s down. I can understand people cheering Fuzzy. I’m one of them.

I can hardly wait until an Irishman wins the Masters, so when Fuzzy says, “I hope you don’t have corned beef and cabbage or whatever they serve,” everybody can have a good laugh and enjoy the joke. Probably the Irishman will enjoy it most of all.

I know being a member of the speech and thought police is an awesome responsibility, Mr. Harvey, but it’s time to move on.

Save your matches, Mr. Harvey, there is no more wood on this fire.

It’s hard to believe that The Times’ sportswriters all witnessed a wonderful golf tournament and didn’t write about it.
