Two Subway Shops Report Robberies in as Many Days

For the second time in as many days, a robber struck at a Subway eatery in Costa Mesa, Police Lt. Jerry Holloway said.

An armed bandit entered the sandwich shop on the 3000 block of Bristol at about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, after customers had left the shop. The robber ordered a drink and some food, then pulled a gun on an employee behind the counter. He told the employee to remove the cash from the register and ordered him into the back room before fleeing with $98. No one was injured.

At nearly the same time Monday, a Subway on the 1900 block of Newport Boulevard was robbed by an armed man, who also ordered employees into a back room. That robber got away with $70, and there were no injuries.

Holloway said police are unsure whether the robberies are connected. “It’s the same type of [method], but the description [of the gunman] doesn’t match,” said Holloway. The robber Monday was described as “shorter and chubbier” than the one in Tuesday’s crime, he said.
