From Times Wire Reports

Fighting flared between the armed forces and rebels of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola on two fronts in the northern province of Malanje, United Nations officials said. State television reported that 145 people had died, but did not say if they were soldiers, civilians or both. The armed forces would not confirm the fighting. The reports of fresh conflict came two days after U.N. special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi wrapped up a weeklong mission aimed at heading off a renewed civil war. The weekend fighting and other recent attacks have threatened to shatter a fragile peace patched together in 1994.
