Burton’s Lead Blowing in Wind
Brandie Burton’s two-over-par 74 was worth a one-stroke lead midway through the Women’s British Open at Lytham St. Annes, England, where mist and wind blowing in off the Irish Sea made par unattainable.
“I knew that something like this was going to happen on a golf course like this,” said Burton, who carried a one-over-par 145 after 36 holes. Leslie Spalding shot 70 and is one stroke behind.
Wendy Ward, who won the Hawaiian Open in February, shot 71 for a 147. She is tied with Scotland’s Janice Moodie and England’s Suzanne Strudwick, who both shot 72.
Se Ri Pak, winner of two majors and two more tournaments in her rookie season, is seven strokes off the lead. She shot a 74 that included her first birdie of the championship.

Dave Stockton and Spain’s Jose Maria Canizares shot five-under-par 67s to share the first-round lead in the Senior PGA Tour’s First of America Classic at Ada, Mich.
Stockton, the 1996 winner, birdied five of his final 11 holes.

Jenny Chuasiriporn, who lost the U.S. Women’s Open in a playoff, rolled past two opponents in match play to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Ann Arbor, Mich.
She’ll play Brandi Miller of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., with the winner advancing to Sunday’s 36-hole championship match. The other semifinal matches Marcy Newton of High Point, N.C., against Grace Park of Phoenix.
