Traffic Collision Kills Local Resident
A Simi Valley man who may have been drinking was killed when his Mercedes-Benz sedan hit the rear of a Ford Aerostar van and overturned in Northridge, police said Saturday.
Joseph Tignor, 29, was eastbound on Nordhoff Street east of Etiwanda Avenue when his car and the van collided about 10 p.m. Friday, said Los Angeles Police Officer Mary Brady.
“It was a speed factor,” Brady said. “The Mercedes was going a high rate of speed, probably going way too fast for a 35 mph zone, and clipped the van.”
Tignor, who appeared not to have been wearing a seat belt, suffered a head injury when the Mercedes overturned. He died at the scene, said Pamela Eaker, an investigator from the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
An open bottle containing beer was found with Tignor, Brady said, but tests are needed to determine whether he had been driving while intoxicated.
The driver and a passenger in the van suffered minor injuries but were not taken to a medical facility, Brady said.
