MOVIES
Hong Kong action maestro Tsui Hark reteams with Jean-Claude Van Damme for “Knock Off,” in which Van Damme plays a jeans sales rep who, as the British Crown Colony returns to Chinese rule, discovers a conspiracy to unleash a wave of terrorism. The film opens Friday in general release.
THEATER
Neil Patrick Harris (“Rent”) and Emily Bergl head the cast as the tragic star-crossed lovers in the Old Globe Theatre production of Shakespeare’s passionate “Romeo and Juliet.” Directed by Daniel Sullivan, the play opens Saturday under the stars in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre.
ART
“Tracing,” a multi-media installation with changing visual and audio elements that are activated by the movements of viewers, opens Tuesday at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Created by George Legrady, the installation is presented in conjunction with next month’s “L.A. Freewaves” festival.
VIDEO
Teenage girls will be able to watch “Titanic” and their dreamboat Leonardo DiCaprio to their hearts’ content when the top-grossing film of all time makes its arrival on video Tuesday. Kate Winslet, above with DiCaprio, and Billy Zane also star in James Cameron’s Oscar-winning epic on the 1912 sea disaster.
DANCE
The acclaimed Maria Bermudez and her company of 10 dancers, singers and musicians bring a new edition of “Sonidos Gitanos/Gypsy Flamenco” to the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood on Friday, Saturday and next Sunday, with special guest Alejandro Granados.
MUSIC
John Mauceri, above, and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra continue to celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s 80th birthday year (with “Chichester Psalms” and excerpts from his Mass) and the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s birth (with Concerto in F) at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday.
POP MUSIC
The three-day Long Beach Blues Festival takes over the Cal State Long Beach athletic field starting Saturday. The 19th annual event, which runs through Labor Day, showcases an all-star lineup, including a 30th anniversary celebration of Roomful of Blues and a British Blues Reunion.
POP MUSIC
Not since Los Lobos two decades ago has a band come out of Los Angeles with Latin-based textures as joyous as those pumped out by Ozomatli. The multiethnic group plays free shows Wednesday at the student union at Cal State Northridge and Thursday evening on the Santa Monica Pier.
