Greathouse, LaVere Team Up to Lift Buena Into Title Game
It might have been wishful thinking--who wouldn’t want her for four more years?--but the program at the Buena High girls’ basketball tournament listed Kelly Greathouse as a freshman.
Greathouse, a sophomore, played like a senior Friday night, scoring 19 points in Buena’s 65-22 victory over Hart in pool play.
The 6-foot-2 Greathouse also had 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs (3-0), who held Hart (3-2) to two first-half baskets en route to a 34-7 halftime lead.
Greathouse has a new sidekick. Freshman Courtney LaVere, also 6-2, had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Buena, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times.
“Defenses will play one of us and we’ll just pass it to each other,” Greathouse said. “There’s no way teams can guard both of us.”
Greathouse had eight second-quarter points, helping the Bulldogs extend a 20-4, first-quarter lead.
LaVere scored eight first-quarter points.
“Imagine playing her three more years after this, for crying out loud,” Hart Coach Dave Munroe said.
Briana Kentfield scored six points for Hart, which made five of 37 shots and 12 of 29 free throws.
Buena will play Channel League rival Ventura (2-1) in the championship game at 8 tonight.
Ventura lost to Alemany (3-1), 69-60, but advanced to the final based on point differential in pool play. Kate Beckler scored 30 points for Alemany.
