NEW YORK — Lightly regarded Fire King raced on or near the lead throughout to score a 2 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s Queens County Handicap for horses 3-and-older at Aqueduct.
Fire King raced head-and-head with Early Warning into the stretch and then pulled away in the drive for the win.
Fire King went 1 3/16 miles in 1:56:4 to earn the $49,140 winner’s share of the $81,900 purse for Eugene Hauman and Barry K. Schwartz. The win was the fourth in 11 starts this year for the 5-year-old.
The winner paid $18.60. Las Vegas Ernie was second, a neck in front of Mr. Sinatra.
