5 Social Service Agencies Get $1.2 Million in Grants
LOS ANGELES — Five Los Angeles-area social service agencies have received grants totaling $1.2 million from the California Community Foundation, which is creating educational programs to help prevent teenage pregnancies.
The foundation, established by the Audrey Backus estate last year, will eventually provide $16 million for teen programs as well as elder care.
The agencies receiving grants announced this week were: the Asian Pacific Health Care Venture in Hollywood, the Bienvenidos Children’s Center Inc. in East Los Angeles, the California Family Health Council Inc. in South-Central Los Angeles, the Human Services Assn. in Bell Gardens and the Valley Community Clinic in North Hollywood.
The agencies, each awarded about $200,000, will create family planning and health education programs for teenagers and young adults, and will hire counselors to teach parents how to discuss sex and pregnancy issues with their children.
