Album Reviews
In his two previous recordings, Venezuelan-born pianist Edward Simon, best known for his work in trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s band and with saxophonist Bobby Watson’s Horizon, has shown technical skill, deep-seated, melodic convictions and a respectful sense of his own roots. On his first disc for the small-but-adventurous Mythology label, he proves himself a serious composer and arranger as well. Working with saxophonist Dave Binney, trumpeter Diego Urcola, percussionist and steel pan player Adam Cruz, bassist Ben Street, vocalist Milton Cardona and others, Simon has created a program of intense feeling, whether in the melancholy, finally triumphant mood of “The Process” or the sensual abandonment of “The Cha Cha.” Simon’s reworking of two Venezuelan folk songs, the title tune and “Quinta Anauco” makes for the disc’s most heartfelt moments. Though not yet 30, Simon is an important presence on the jazz and world music scene. (Available from https://www.mythologyrecords.com, or by calling [888] 684-2968.)
